The Vines

Aesthetically the plants are a treasure quick to grow in the spring, they go from dormant, to a lush green. From early summer though the fall there is the potential for fresh fruit dependent on the variety. When they flower the small white flowers will soon turn to berries. When they turn to berries the red color is a gorgeous change, and stunning contrast against the vines that make picking easy.

Berries

The berries come in different sizes and strength of flavorful. The size of the berries are not the only downside to consider. Some berries are soft and others a firm you will need to pick a variety that is right for you. The Strawberries can be cooked for jams jellies and pies the possibilities are quite extravagate. If crushed you can even make juice or smoothies. The flavor and nutrients are excellent.

The plants can grow a bit invasively if not maintenance. The care needed is minimal, in the late fall or early winter when plants are dormant, they will need to be pruned. To prune simply cut off the runners at the crown. A pair of pruners works great. In the spring they will grow right back up stronger and heathier and there will be a higher yield. With the growth of runners comes the opportunity to make roots for new plants for each runner will set down roots if given soil. They will be easily trained to pots should you wish to have more plants. The main plants are called mother plants and those plants should be replaced every three years to keep up optimal fruiting.

Propagating

When you propagate your runner you will want to plant them in the early fall in order to allow them to root successively. It can be a great learning project for the kids the root are fast growing and planting them out is a easy project that can help them to learn.
